Unexplained Cases | Forever Home of the Abandoned and Forgotten: Forest Haven

When one hears the word “asylum” … especially when paired with “haunted” or “abandoned” … dreadful images come to mind of decaying buildings, sinister hallways, and forgotten lives. Forest Haven in Laurel, Maryland, has all of these and much more. Walking these grounds, Rick Garner felt a similar sadness...the kind he felt at Pennhurst but perhaps something more...something darker. The facility opened in 1925 as the District Training School for the Mentally Retarded. It was a farm-like institution designed to provide patients with useful skills. In 1928, the first of many on-ground burials occurred. In 1963, the property was named Forest Haven but during that decade, the property would begin its decline. Funding was cut, the population of residents grew to include people with epilepsy, but the worst happened in 1974 when a nearby orphanage called “Junior Village” closed and its 20 souls were moved into Forest Haven. Think about that for a moment....people with epilepsy - a brain disorder where nerve cell activity is disturbed causing seizures - and orphans - placed in an overcrowded, ill-equipped, and dysfunctional facility. Aspiration Pneumonia in patients was common. It was caused by patients being fed while lying down. Physical, mental, and sexual abuse were rampant. Patients were hit with belts, switches, and baseball bats. Teeth were knocked out. Even in death, patients could find no peace. 389 were buried in a mass grave on the property. Erosion eventually uncovered some of their remains. With all these accounts, it’s no surprise that Forest Haven is rumored to be extremely haunted and is frequently explored by urbexers. Mike from Charm City Paranormal has explored Forest Haven so many times, he refers to it as his second home. On Halloween 2020, Mike led the Unexplained Cases team through some of the decaying buildings of Forest Haven. The paranormal evidence we collected is compelling but we encourage you to be the judge.

Haunted M's of Philly: McGillin's Olde Ale House | Unexplained Cases (2022)

Written by:  Darren Dedo Case Filed: 9/24/22 Executive Producer:  Rick Garner   Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: the birthplace of America. Home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall - where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed. So much history and some say a lot of ghosts. The Unexplained Cases team traveled to the City of Brotherly Love, to investigate several paranormal hotspots known to be haunted by the spirits from the Revolutionary War…of famous business owners and politicians…some really crazy dressed apparitions…and possibly a pirate, too! In our second of three investigations, we visit the world-famous McGillin’s Olde Ale House in the heart of Philly. This watering hole opened to the public when Abraham Lincoln was elected President! Catherine and Williams McGillin poured the first beer there in 1860. Ma and Pa McGillin raised their 13 kids upstairs from the bar. Pa McGillin passed away in 1901, and Ma took over the joint. Ma ran it until she p

In our third of three investigations, not a lot of places have a word in their name twice but the Morton Morton House in Norwood, Pennsylvania - just outside of Philly - isn’t like most places. This building was constructed way back in 1750 by Morton Morton. Yes, that is his name. He was the great grandson of Marten Martenson. Morton Morton was the first cousin to John Morton, one of the signers of the Declarat

Written by:  Timothy J. Seppala Case Filed: 11/25/22 Executive Producer:  Rick Garner   Welcome to Detroit: home of square pizza, techno, Motown records and the traffic light. What it's best known for though are cars. Ford, General Motors and the automaker formerly known as Chrysler all call the Motor City home. By the early 20th Century, Detroit was the third-largest city in the nation, with almost two million residents. But those parabolic highs couldn't last forever. In 2021, just under 640,00 lived within the city limits. Detroit is a city with no shortage of heartaches. From tthe race riots of 1967, 2013's record-setting $19 billion municipal bankruptcy, and the Lions - who've been bad since practically forever - Detroit's woes need no introduction. Some place the blame at the feet of politicians like the mayor who oversaw that bankruptcy, Kwame Kilpatrick. Others blame billionaires like Quicken Loans CEO Dan Gilbert or broken promises from the Illitch fam
