Alton, Illinois is what you would call a true river town. Its waters are the Mississippi, the Illinois and the Missouri. Alton was born in 1818 after Rufus Easton established it as a river town and gave it his son’s name. Alton is known for Limestone bluffs and historic homes. At one time confederate prisoners of war were kept behind bars in the Alton Military Prison during the Civil War.

Alton, is certainly a quaint, old, historic Midwest community. Some say it's the most haunted small town in all of America.

The Unexplained Cases team wanted to find out for ourselves if Alton is a hotspot for paranormal activity. One place we’ve always wanted to investigate, the McPike Mansion. Its owner is Sharyn Luedke.

“I’m basically a big chicken, I do not watch scary movies, I don’t do any of that. But you now own one of the most haunted places in America? I do,” said Luedke.

So, who haunts the home…

Smallpox. It was a dreaded killer and disfigurer for more than 3,000 years in all parts of the world. Prior to the vaccine’s discovery in 1796, more than 400,000 people a year died from smallpox in Europe alone. Worldwide vaccination efforts led to the disease eradication in 1979.

The highly contagious and deadly viral disease once contracted either killed the victim or left them with significant scarring - especially on the face, arms, and legs.
Before the late 1800s, many cities built hospitals specifically for treating smallpox sufferers. In New York City, on the southern tip of Blackwell’s Island (now Roosevelt Island), one such hospital opened on December 18, 1856, to keep infected patients isolated far away from the population.  James Renwick Jr. designed the smallpox hospital. Better known for Grace Church on Broadway, St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Madison Avenue and the Smithsonian I…

Tombstone, Arizona was home to Lawman Wyatt Earp, gunfighter Doc Holiday, dancing girls, saloons, gambling halls, and ladies of the night. There was something for everyone in this old dusty western town in the late 1800’s. The days of the old west are over, now, ghosts are said to haunt this quaint old town.

Kenn Barrett is a Tombstone native who is now a Wyatt Earp impersonator. He explains why many people believe the town is haunted.

“Famous ghost stories here are about the shadow people. Don’t look directly at them when you are walking down the sidewalk actually at night if you look just out of the corner of your eye, you’ll see people between the buildings looking at something. Then, you look at them and then they’re gone. A very common report we get here in Tombstone,” said Barrett.

She is an incredible sight to see tied up to Pier One in Baltimore Harbor - the USS Constellation. Many believe the ship is haunted. We will get to the ghosts in a minute - but, first we need a history lesson.

The USS Constellation was born in 1854 - constructed from materials that were salvaged from the frigate USS Constellation - which sailed the seas in the late 1700s to early 1800s. This new version of the majestic ship stretches 199 feet long, 43 feet across.

The Constellation was armed with 16 cannons and more than a dozen large pounder-mounted guns that could sink an enemy vessel on command from the Captain. The first captain of the Constellation, Captain Charles H. Bell.

Unexplained Cases | Residential Haunting

Some people call it one of the most haunted spots in all of Phoenix. Todd, the homeowner, says he has several ghostly guests who refuse to leave. Mediums and paranormal investigators have told Todd that three spirits are in the house: a little girl, a woman, and an angry man named Paul. My daughter, Caroline, picked up on energy right away. "It just feels weird...like anxiousness."

We quickly learned this was an intelligent haunting as we asked questions and the ghosts answered through our equipment - like the K2 meter and REM Pod. The spirits reached out from the dead via our SLS camera - which uses depth sensory and light protection technology to detect images in a 3D enviornment. It uses infrared dots to help map living - and not so living - objects - mapping them into stick figures. The K2 meter lights up when it detects changes in the electromagnetic field in Todd's home.…
