Field Reports from King's Tavern - Natchez, Mississippi

Written by: Rick Garner
Case Filed: 11/03/00 - Natchez, Mississippi
Executive Producer: Rick Garner

4:30pm - Arrived at King's Tavern and began surveying structure. Upon going to Madeline's room, the crew began feeling what I described as "a need to pop my neck - tightness and heaviness upon chest." Rob Ruffin (videographer) agreed that the sensation was similar to what he felt at both the Spengler Hotel in Jackson and McRaven in Vicksburg. Janis Raley, Founder of the Ghost Preservation League, also joins us.

5:05pm - Rob catches a long, flowing shadow out of the corner of his eye in Madeline's upstairs bedroom. He was surprised and somewhat shaken by the experience. Nothing was found that could have produced a shadow in the room. Plus, Rob was quite certain this shadow was not a "normal" shadow. 5:35pm - While interviewing the owner of the Tavern in the restaurant, footsteps were heard upstairs when no one was there. Before the interview, Rob had trouble with both his microphone and camera. The microphone refused to operate, which was unusual, and his camera would not focus on a painting of Madeline. Other photographers have also tried to get a picture of the painting and were forced to make several attempts. The image is blurred and unfocused.

6:30pm - Enjoyed some fine dining at King's Tavern...the prime rib is to die for, no pun intended.

8pm - Janis, who was not feeling well and remained upstairs to take a nap, reported that temperature devices sounded alarms in her room as the temperature dropped 20 degrees! She had contemplated throwing out the units, prior to that as she felt they didn't work.

9:30pm
- While setting up equipment in Madeline's bedroom, only a few minutes passed before a fully charged Hi-8 camera battery was fully drained. Battery drainage seems to be typical in haunted areas. Eddie Mazzone was surprised by this incident. Several experiments were conducted on the home, including electromagnetic tests. Several locations in the upstairs area had strong energy areas, but would be weak later - as if energy in the building was changing. Microphones and cameras were placed in the bedroom and attic.

11:30pm - From our command monitoring station, we heard various strange noises, but all could be attributed to some of the staff still being in the building. A woman's voice was picked up on the bedroom microphone, but further analysis will need to be done to determine what was said. No one besides our team was in the Tavern.

12:14am - Darren had been left alone at the command station when he seemed to feel something falling down his neck and gently poke him in the back. No physical objects had fallen down his back.

2am - No further activity seemed to occur upstairs, but lights that had on in the restaurant downstairs were then off when we were packing up. Janis remained to spend the night in Madeline's room.

Conclusions: We learned the next morning that Janis had an uneventful evening and rested soundly. Our analysis of the recordings revealed nothing concrete. Much of which we suspected as paranormal was actually sound pollution from the neighborhood and passing automobiles.

These images were taken by Janis Raley, Founder of the Ghost Preservation League on Saturday evening, October 14. The first image is in the backyard of the building. The contrast has been increased to define the three orbs around the tree. The white and red lights are man-made.

The second image was rather outstanding as the orb was very well defined, was still not visible to the naked eye, and is outside of Madeline's window.

The final image is rather humorous as it shows Ed Mazzone continuing to setup out command base while stream of orbs seem to float down the stairway.

The Haunted History of Kings Landing | Unexplained Cases (2024)

Written by:  Rick Garner Case Filed: 9/1/24 Executive Producer:  Rick Garner   In Calvert County, Maryland, along the shore of the Patuxent River, the 260-acre Kings Landing Park is a wonderful location to experience history and nature. Once an active farm and later a YMCA camp, kayakers, canoeists, fishman, nature lovers, and families enjoy Kings Landing Park for its access to the river, creeks, marshes, and hiking trails. Picnic areas are available for small and large groups, large pavilions require reservations, and an event hall is also available for rent. Captain John Smith - the English explorer who played an important role in the establishment of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia - explored the region between 1607 and 1609. Also, British warships chased the American fleet up the river during the War of 1812. History at Kings Landing Park is being experienced in other ways. Driving onto this peaceful and beautiful property, it's difficult to imagine it being a p...

Secrets of the House in Between | Unexplained Cases (2024)

Written by:  Rick Garner Case Filed: 6/29/24 Executive Producer:  Rick Garner   Why are some places haunted while seemingly others are not? Why are some considered very haunted? One home in Mississippi appears to be very haunted when you consider the variety and frequency of documented supernatural activity. Under constant surveillance, the focus of two documentaries and countless investigations, what’s become known as “The House In Between” once was just a uniquely designed home in Florence. In 2011, our own Darren Dedo was an anchor and reporter for ABC affiliate WAPT. This was many years after our creation of “Unexplained” at the local CBS affiliate WJTV. Darren was the first journalist homeowner Alice Jackson entrusted with the secrets of her haunted house. Ten years later, in 2021, Darren reconnected with Alice and she shared consistent and additional details about her house. In November 2023, Rick Garner visited this infamous home one afternoon. While he wou...
